The Thief and the Zen Master

Ryokan, a Zen master, lived in absolute simplicity in a small hut at the foot of a mountain. One evening a thief entered the hut and made the discovery that there was nothing to steal. Ryokan returned and caught him. "Maybe you made a long way to see me," said the thief "and must not go empty-handed. Do me the courtesy, accept my clothes as a gift. " The thief was bewildered. He took the clothes and slipped out. Ryokan sat naked, to contemplate the moon. "Poor man," she thought, "I wanted to give him this beautiful moon"
